Autism is a heartbreaking disorder affecting entire families. Every day is a struggle for the parents and other members of the family, as well, as for the autistic child. I personally know parents with an autistic child. Often these parents are criticised for not being able to control their autistic daughter, although their other two children are well behaved. However, having taught in public schools for over 30 years, I must agree in principle with Michael Savage, if not by percentage. I have had many students classified as autistic, ADD, and ADHD; and a large percentage (perhaps 75% to 80%) of these students were simply difficult children and behavior problems with little or no parental discipline. Many were simply inquisitive children in an educational system that does not promote free thinking. Parents were all too willing to turn their parenting responsibilities over to perscription drugs and special classes. The children, in turn, used their classification as a crutch, insisting that they were unable to be successful in the classroom because of their affliction. It was so sad to see bright, capable children give up on themselves because they were conditioned to believe that there was something psycologically wrong with them. I often do not agree with Dr. Savage; but in this case, he is correct; and I applaud him for speaking out concerning the over-diagnosis of autism, ADD, and ADHD.
