The Garden Rebel loves daylilies for a first-tier groundcover in a landscape. Large beds regularly mulched require very little care and help add a lush appearance to the design. Daylilies are available in a wide variety of growth habits, shapes and colors, including yellow, orange, red, pink, purple, near-white and shades and combinations of all of these.
Daylilies are members of the lily family, in the genus Hemerocallis; "Hemero" is Greek for "day" and "callis" for "beauty," i.e. beauty for a day.
Why To Use Daylilies
- Daylilies are great for full sun or semi-shade.
- They are perfect for slopes and can hide ugly areas where grass fails to grow.
- They look great with homes of brick, stone or wood.
- Mix your daylilies. Put taller, brighter colors in the background.
- Cut the flowers for beautiful arrangements in your home
- Daylilies are great for "Tag Team Gardening". When the early blooms finish, the mid-season ones begin. When they finish, the late bloomers take over!
Feeding Your Daylilies
- In sandy soil, use Black Kow cow manure to build the organic structure of your soil.
- Daylilies are heavy feeders! Feed them six times per year with rose or azalea fertilizer.
- At least twice per year, give them Epsom salts and nitrate of soda as a supplement.
