Man Holds Daughter Captive 24 Years

An Austrian man has confessed to imprisoning his daughter in a cellar for 24 years and fathering her seven children.
73-year-old Josef Fritzl was arrested on Saturday and "has admitted building the dungeon and to holding his daughter and three children there. But he has not admitted incest," spokesman Gerhard Sedlacek told AFP.

Fritzl's daughter, Elisabeth, told police her father began sexually abusing her when she was 11 and he locked her up in a room in the cellar on August 28, 1984. Now aged 42, Elisabeth was found after a tip-off to police. Police said Elisabeth only agreed to talk after the authorities promised she would not have to have see her father again and the children would be taken care of.

During her 24 years in captivity, she said she had six children by him. The seventh child was a twin who died shortly after birth. Josef Fritzl removed the body and burned it. The two oldest children, aged 18 and 19, and the youngest aged 5, had been locked up with their mother since birth and had never seen sunlight or received any education, police said.

Josef's wife Rosemarie had no idea what was going on. Three of Elisabeth's younger children were left on her parents' doorstep, the first accompanied by a letter saying she could not look after the baby herself. All were taken in by Josef and his wife as foster or adopted children and went to school as normal.

The mother and children are now being treated in hospital by a team of psychologists.

What do you think about this story? What should happen to the father? How will Elisabeth and her children come through it? Comment below.

Just get ready for this morbid cash cow to spin out books, documentaries, Lifetime made for TV movie specials, Barbara Walters interviews...etc. We are now going to be strangely fascinated with this story-- like a huge natural disaster or firey car wreck. The whole thing is disgusting, yet I want to know more.
  • dungeon
He should be sent to prison or worse.
  • dungeon
we're not getting the whole story. He kept his own daughter captive for 24 years and his wife had no idea? Three of Elisabeth's children left on their doorstep with a note? Wouldn't Rosemarie want to talk to her daughter? Or wonder where she is? Hard to believe even for 5 years.
  • The wife is "dummying-up"
I believe the wife is in on it too....come on for 20+ years....i'm pretty sure she heard noise from below or above or even outside. especially if the girl gave birth in there....i pretty sure she was screaming while in labor and stuff like that....this guys should rot in hell.
  • Disgusting
How does someone get away with this for so long? How did the wife have no idea? Unbelievable...
