What do the CFP certification marks represent?
Anyone can call himself or herself a "financial planner", but only those who have fulfilled the certification and renewal requirements of the CFP board can use its certification marks. The CFP certification marks identify finacial planners who are dedicated and professional.

Why are CFP certification requirements important?
The CFP Board's certificatin process assures the public that individuals authorized to use its marks have met educational and experience requirements to provide comprehensive financial planning advice and are committed to high standards and conduct. The certification marks also signal that a financial planner has voluntarily submitted to the regulatory authority CFP Board.

What are CFP certification requirements?

    Education: There are three alternate ways to meet the CFP certification education requirement: 1. completing an education at one of the more than 130 colleges and universities whose curriculum is registered witht he CFP Board; or 2. submit a transcript of previous financial planning-related course work to the CFP board for review and credit; or 3. showing the transcript of previous financial planning related course work to the CFP Board for review and credit; or 3. having certain professional designations or academic degrees.

    Examinination: Candidates for CFP certification must pass a rigorous two-day, 10 hour CFP Certification Examination that covers the financial planning process and includes such topics as tax planning, employee benefits, estate planning, investment management, and insurance.

    Experience: Candidates for CFP certification have their backgrounds checked by the CFP Board, and must also divulge investigations or leagal proceedings related to their professional or business conduct. The CFP Board reviews all such areas and investigates those statements that indicate areas of concern.
