| I use groundcovers in landscape designs for one main reason -- low maintenance. The higher the percentage of groundcovers, the lower the percentage of grass. Having a lower percentage of grass in your total volume of space translates into less time mowing the yard. In the summer, the grass needs to be mowed about once a week; the groundcovers never have to be mowed. Oh yeah, I know what you're thinking -- the groundcovers still need to be trimmed and fertilized. Yeah, they do, but not every week. Groundcovers are always the first tiers of a bed; the whole idea is to plant in a mass. A large grouping of one species is always more impressive, just as one flowering geranium is nothing exceptional; a mass of bright red geraniums will generate an exciting comment. Go to any theme park and you'll see that this is true. Be Practical The right variety not only determnes the flow of beauty, but it's important to remember to be practical. For the most part, the vast majority of folks are like me--you only have so much free time and choose to have a life by not becoming a slave to the yard. I don't care how much you love your yard, when it gets out of hand you don't have time, energy or money to keep it up and it becomes a four-letter word--WORK! There are plenty of varieties that are low maintenance where you may only need to trim lightly once or twice a year. Choosing the right varieties can make your garden life so much easier.
