Tips on Choosing a Contractor
Doing home improvements can make your home even more livable and increase its value. It will also allow you to avoid any unnecessary expenses and the inconvenience of having to move from the neighborhood you have grown so accustomed to. Finding and choosing the correct contractor will help you tremendously in having your remodeling project go as smooth as possible.

The first step is to figure out what you need to get done. If you have multiple projects, list them from the most important to the least needed. Once you have decided on your improvements. Start on some personal research by asking neighbors, friends, family, or co-workers if they or anyone they know has had this type of work done. Look for projects being worked on in your surrounding area and the company signs, which should be posted beside the building permits. Contact your local Trade Association for example: Home Builders Association, Aluminum Association, or local Realtor Group.

Now that you have a list of a few contractors that do the type of work you want done. Check to see if, they are licensed for this specific type of work before calling them. Orange County has an on-line service http://orangecountyfl.net/cms/default.htm with a complete list of contractors. Also the State of Florida Department of Regulations has a list. Or simply call your local municipality and they will have the information you need, and now you should have your list of contractors to contact.

Find out if there is someone there to answer the phone, or see what type of response you get. See if phone calls are returned, was the person on the phone helpful and courteous. First impressions are extremely important.

When communicating to the contractor, explain as much detail as you can of what you want to accomplish. This can allow him or her to evaluate what the project entails and whether it is something they want to pursue.

When meeting with the contractor or representative, it is important that you get along. Some projects can and will be lengthy, if you do not see eye to eye at the beginning it can be an aggravating experience for both you and the contractor. Tell the truth of your expectations and your budget. A good contractor will work toward your expectations and your budget as long as they are within reasonable reach. Now that you have chosen a contractor, make sure to get a copy of his/hers General Liability and Workers Compensation Insurance. Contact several customer references and to be completely thorough supplier references as well.

You are well on your way to having a positive experience on your home improvement project!
